The zombies have arrived, and Blaine needs to escape. He'd always thought of his London neighborhood as a place of safety, but then his infected neighbors tried to eat him. Blaine packed a bag and fled through growing numbers of shambling, voracious monsters--people, he had to remind himself, they're people--toward his family in Bristol. He would surely have died without the turn of luck that brought him Commander Andrew Peterson. Together, they face the horrors and adversities of the apocalypse, trying to protect their loved ones, and—if they’re lucky—find love for themselves. (M/M)

This is one of those occasions when I'm happy I tried a new-to-me author. Big time bonus on top: a zombie-pocalypse.Looking back at my reading updates, the characterization and level of emotion made their appearances early. They more than held up all the way through.
Blaine and Andrew each had issues and hang-ups prior to the Outbreak and, just cuz the undead begin chomping at the bit for brains and some morphing into skitters who scale walls with creepy speed, they don't exactly take a backseat or let them off the hook.
This story covers about three months or so, and the ways these people get to know each feel organic and realistic in this time frame. The world as they know it might be ending but you can't rush or force connections and friendships, or trust. What I really like is how often I was surprised, in a good way, about the actions or words, the decisions they each made. What I like even more is how those surprises translated into the deep emotions they made me feel. That was unexpected, and most welcome.
I mean, c'mon, zombie-pocalypse + emotions + tension in the forms of close calls of the escaping kind, danger from both the living and the dead, and personal revelations with consequences = my kinda shindig.
Yes, let's get to that third and final part of the equation, shall we? More than once, I realized I was contorting myself into a fair version of a human pretzel thanks to that tension, whether human vs walker or human vs human. The underlying brilliance of that tension, though, is in the not at all mundane details of every day survival in the zombie apocalypse: finding food, protecting what and who you have, keeping watch, trying to keep safe, dilemma of who you help and who you don't... who you can't. Kinsley gives all of this to us.
The writing wavers, especially in the beginning. Some of the dialogue feels "B movie-ish", phrases are repeated, and a few times it felt like boxes on what to include in a zombie story were being ticked. But it does improve. And Kinsley is a true storyteller with connection and understanding to and of his characters, their emotions, and the perils they face, physically and emotionally.
The possibilities are sorta endless in this universe, and I want more time with these peeps.
The zombie action scenes are varied and intense, and I ate them up.**
The relationship between Blaine and Andrew is slow to build, with many bumps and sidetracks. I see the beginnings of what could be a strong team, and I wanna see them in action again and again.
I snorted laughing a few times, my heart did the fluttery thing, and it threatened to lodge itself in my throat more than once.
I enjoyed being able to picture many of the locations having visited some.
I want the next story with these guys. :D

****4 STARS****
I love a good zombie story with the heros falling in love and having to fight their way through the zombie apocalypse. Albion Rising is a good one. It wasn't complex, but it kept me entertained and reading it straight through. The author is talented, he knows how to draw a reader in and make them invest in the characters survival and developments.
Blaine started out as a real weakling, but thanks to a lethal old man who trained him for 2 months, he became stronger. I'm glad the author didn't turn him from a weakling to instant Rambo in 5 seconds. LOL. It took 2 months for him to become an expert shooter and zombie killer, but he was still a skinny, 19 year old kid trying to survive. He still felt fear so it made him realistic and human.
Andrew was already a warrior when the zombie infection started. He was a marine and had the chance to get away, but he stayed. Unfortunately, he wasn't very popular with the civilians. His orders where to kill anyone and anything that tried to get on the military base and he followed orders. Months later, he leaves to find his sister after his lover and best friend dies in his arms. it was really sad.
I like how the author didn't make Andrew so macho. In the beginning, it was like Andrew was cold and heartless, but he broke down and cried. He tried to fight his feeling for Blaine, but there was a good reason for it.
This isn't a book with a lot of sex, there's only like 2 scenes but it was enough. Made the book more realistic. Props to Kinsley and I can't wait for book 2. I gave this story 4 STARS instead of 5 just because someone died at the end that I didn't want to die (GRRR), and there were really slow moments with the characters doing nothing.
This was a really good book. I had not heard of this author and didn't really know what to expect - but was really pleasantly surprised. There was a lot of character development - and I really liked these characters - I liked seeing both of their background's and watching their story develop - I loved the chemistry and how the romance developed. I loved the zombie aspect - it was exciting, and suspenseful, and emotional. It made me tear up a few times. And I really appreciated how it wasn't totally unbelievable - so many of these zombie romances are so over the top but this one was really great. But mostly I just loved the connection between Blaine and Andrew. I can't say enough good things about this book - I highly recommend it and I really hope we do get a book 2 very soon.
